Black mold feeds on whatever surface it attaches to. Mold also can cause dry rot in a wooden building beam, weakening it until it no longer supports the structure. Mold often grows and spreads behind walls and under flooring, causing extensive damage before it is detected. If you have had a flood or water damage and clean up was not done in a timely matter black mold can form. Often times, black mold is found around the water source and can/will destroy anything in its surrounding areas. Look for dark black patches of mold on walls and moldings where the flooring and wall meet. As the black mold spreads, it can be found farther up the wall affecting drywall and layers underneath.

Health Risks
Black mold can cause severe health risks. It most commonly attacks the immune system. Children and Elderly are at a higher risk because they have weaker immune systems.
Check members of your family for skin irritations, sinus problems, congestion and fatigue. These can all be signs that black mold is in your home. If a loved one isn’t recovering from a cold or allergy, black mold may be the culprit.

Precautions
It is always better to be safe than sorry when dealing with black mold. Contact a home inspector, who can test to see if you have black mold issues in your home. An inspector can also search inner walls, floorboards, and other areas you may not be able to reach.
