Holiday Precautions
It’s not uncommon, even during the holidays, to come home and find a disaster waiting for you. Take extra precautions to keep you and your family safe during the holiday season.
Inspect all holiday lights and extension cords before decorating. Replace any that are fraying or damaged. As a general rule, use no more than three standard-size sets of lights together and make certain they’re UL approved. UL stands for Underwriters’ Laboratories, which is a nationally recognized, nonprofit, safety-testing agency for the US. Do not overload extension cords or electrical receptacles. Unplug all holiday lights when you go to sleep or leave home. Mount your Christmas tree on a sturdy base and make sure it is clear of all heat sources. Have your chimney and wood-burning fireplace inspected and cleaned annually. Don’t leave burning candles unattended.
